"Buckwheat Grain"
Welcome to my very first zine, Гречневая крупа! “Гречневая крупа,” translated from Russian is “buckwheat grain.” Even after my family immigrated to the states, this grain stayed a staple food in my home. “Гречка” to me not only is a symbol of my culture, but it also holds a feeling of comfort and belonging amidst the chaos and uncertainty of life, which I hope to capture through this work.
This zine is an eclectic collection of images that tells an intimate story of my relationship to my Russian culture. It explores the tension between cultural expectations and personal expressions of my identity.
While this zine touches on a variety of very nuanced and complicated topics, which I merely graze with my drawings and found imagery, my main goal is to reflect how I experience the interplay between being queer and Russian.
